Why does going to the dentist give me anxiety?

Many people experience anxiety about going to the dentist, and it's a common issue.  The reasons for this anxiety are often a combination of different factors.  Some of the most common causes are:

1. Traumatic Past Experiences

  • A negative or painful experience at the dentist, especially in childhood, can have a lasting impact and create a fear of future visits.

  • This can also be a result of a procedure that was done without your consent or caused complications.

2. Fear of Pain

  • Even with modern pain management tools, the anticipation of pain can be a major source of anxiety.

  • This can be related to a fear of needles for injections or a fear that the anesthetic won't work effectively.

3. Loss of Control

  • Lying back in a dental chair with your mouth open can make you feel vulnerable and helpless.  You can't see what's happening and you have limited ability to communicate.

  • This feeling of not being in control is a significant source of discomfort for many people.

4. Embarrassment

  • You may feel self-conscious or embarrassed about the state of your teeth, bad breath, or other oral health issues.

  • This can lead to a fear of being judged by the dentist or hygenist.

5. Fear of the Unknown

  • Not knowing what to expect during a procedure, or the possibility of discovering a new, serious dental problem, can be overwhelming.

  • The sounds and smells of a dental office, which as the whirring of drills, can also be triggers.

6. Other Phobias and Conditions

  • Dental anxiety can be connected to other phobias, such as a fear of choking or gagging, or a fear of blood .

  • It can also be a symptom of broader mental health conditions like generalized anxiety disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

It's important to remember that dental anxiety is a real and valid concern, and it's something that we understand and are aware of.  At Downtown Dental, we specialize in treating patients with dental anxiety.  We believe that you have a right to understand everything about your procedure and be an active participant in your care.  We'll answer all your questions and pay special attention to your comfort from beginning to end.

We are committed to reducing your dental anxiety

When dental anxiety is present the most common response is to simply not go to the dentist.  It's a natural reacton to want to avoid these unpleasant feelings completely.  Unfortunately, this  can lead to poor oral care overall and even worse dental problems.

We want to help you be proactive in your care.  When you keep your routine exams, cleaning, and address problems when they're small, you'll be faced with fewer procedures.

Bleu talking to Patient.jpg

"Dr. Bleu Huxford and his staff are exceptional! I was terrified and was close to a panic attack at my first appointment.  The front desk, Karen & Cleigh, were kind and friendly.  Dr. Bleu was soft spoken and took his time with me.  I have never met a dentist that I would go back to until Dr. Bleu!  Thank you Dr. Bleu and staff for being the best dental office I have ever experienced!  My smile is looking good too."
